All about TOK Files

The TOK file type is primarily associated with RecastNavMesh.

TOKFile Extension TOK
File extension: TOK
File type:  token file

What is a TOK file?

TOK files mostly belong to RecastNavMesh.

TOK files are token files that hold specific pieces of data. They are not a single standard format but vary with the application that created them.
Purpose and Functionality:

  • 3D Navigation Mesh Tokens: These files can store navigation mesh data used in pathfinding. For example, the RecastNavMesh Toolset generates TOK files to mark walkable areas. See more at Recast Navigation.
  • CAD Token Files: Some TOK files act as containers for technical tokens in CAD systems, such as those used by TruTops Laser or labeled as a Pro/ENGINEER token file. More details are available at Trumpf.
  • Tokenizer Output: In programming tools like Jupyter Notebook, TOK files are used to store tokenized output from code analysis. Visit Jupyter for information.
  • License and Access Tokens: These files can also contain software license details (for example, by Flexera FlexNet Publisher) or act as access tokens in systems using JSON Web Tokens, such as by Facebook.
  • Linguistic Data Tokens: Some TOK files include dictionary data, like those used for WordPerfect linguistic files.
  • Model and Patch Tokens: In other cases, they store 3D model tokens or patch tokens. Examples include tokens used in Kingsoft Spreadsheets systems or as part of game patches (e.g., Donkey Kong 64 patch files).

FilExt.com tip: Opening or Viewing TOK Files: The proper tool is usually the software that created the file. If the internal format is plain text (sometimes JSON or UTF-8), a text editor may display its content, but many TOK files use a binary structure meant for specific applications.

How to open a TOK file

You need a suitable software like RecastNavMesh to open a TOK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TOK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TOK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TOK files:

  1. RecastNavMesh
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TOK files are often referred to as RecastNavMesh data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. C++ (Ver. 4.x External Token) by Borland Software Corporation

TOK file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the TOK files produces the following result:

The TOK file type includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in TOK files are:

All other TOK files (85%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. JSON and ctokenizer. Tagged as secure, token, shuf, python, train, hackfactory, musketeers, license, testing or maekit. Just click the "Choose your .tok file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your TOK file is.

How to solve problems with TOK files

  • Associate the TOK file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open token files. Because only the current version supports the latest TOK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RecastNavMesh update.
  • To make sure that your TOK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
