What is a VCG file?

VCG files mostly belong to Graphviz. Main type: An VCG file typically contains graph visualization data used to represent nodes and edges from software or system structures.

How to open VCG files

You need a suitable software like Graphviz to open a VCG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VCG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VCG file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. The VCG file extension is quite common and mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 90% of all VCG files are associated with VCG graph. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 130 bytes to 52 KB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. The keywords graph:{, late_edge_labels:yes, layoutalgorithm:dfs, manhattan_edges:yes, port_sharing:no, classes and node: {title:"0" are typical for these files. A usual file name is classes.vcg or classes_Pyreverse.vcg. Such VCG files store data about packages, pyreverse, yourpackage, parser, project, simple, graph and demo.
• 2% of all VCG files use the same file format, which have the signature <SEIVA DBv2000/03><20010901A>. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 95 KB with most files being between 95 KB and 95 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: <SEIVA DBv2000/03><20010901A>.

All other VCG files (8%) have no uniform format, often e.g. Source and Background. Files like these are sometimes linked to myproject, core, analysis, textured, class, dtree, scene, table, rest or tool.
