What is a VML file?

VML files mostly belong to Word by Microsoft. VML is the filename extension of vector image files written in Vector Markup Language, an obsolete, XML-based language for representing 2D vector and mixed vector/raster graphics. VML was developed by Microsoft and used to save vector-based drawings created with Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Visio. Because it is XML-based, a VML image that is embedded in an HTML page can be parsed and rendered by Internet Explorer version 5.0 to 8.x. Version 2 of Google Maps JavaScript API also used VML to store vector paths viewable in Internet Explorer. Outlook 2007, 2010, and 2013 still support the use of VML in developing email templates/designs. The contents of VML files include shape layouts, strokes, paths, anchors, text, cells, rows, styling and client data which make up an image. VML specifications are defined as part of the Open XML standard.

How to open VML files

You need a suitable software like Word to open a VML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
