Opening WAT Files
The WAT file type is primarily associated with Watcom C/C++ Compiler.
What is a WAT file?
WAT files are not a single unified format. They may hold different types of data depending on the generating application.
- Semiconductor Wafer Test Data: This file stores results from wafer acceptance tests. It is used in semiconductor manufacturing to record measurements and quality control data and is produced by tools such as the Watcom C/C++ Compiler.
- WebAssembly Text Format: This version of a WAT file is a human‐readable representation of WebAssembly code written in S-expression syntax. Developers use it for debugging and then convert it to binary form with tools like the WebAssembly Binary Toolkit (WABT). See more details at WABT on GitHub.
- Web Analytics Tool Data: In some cases, a WAT file is an XML-based record of web traffic data. Such files are used by systems like Web Access Tracker to store and process analytics information.
- Web Archive Text File: This file can also serve as a text-based archive of web content. In this context, it is associated with transformation systems such as the one used by the OpenWay BackOffice Server.
How to open and view: If the file is text-based, you can use a standard text editor (like Notepad++). For WebAssembly text files, additional processing with conversion or debugging tools (for example, those in the WebAssembly Binary Toolkit) might be needed. Files with test data or analytics content may require specialized software and reference to the documentation provided by the original application.
How to open a WAT file
You need a suitable software like Watcom C/C++ Compiler to open a WAT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WAT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WAT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert WAT files:
- Watcom C/C++ Compiler
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. WAT files are often referred to as Watcom C/C++ Compiler data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Epson (Personal Settings Information) by Epson CorporationEpson produces printers and imaging products.
- IBM Voice Type Language Map File
WAT file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the WAT files:
The WAT file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all WAT files are associated with WebAssembly Text. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. WAT files are between 460 bytes and 35 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The keywords (module, result i32, i32) (result, (func (param, param i32, (type (;0;), (type (;1;) and (type (;2;) are typical for these files. Examples of file names are _unnamed_.wat. Files like these are about unnamed.
- 15% of all WAT files start with the magic bytes W, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. WAT files are between 15 KB and 190 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: PROCESS, SPEC, LOT ID, TYPE NO and W.A.T. DATA ATTACHED.
All other WAT files (60%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML and DOC. Sometimes used for warc, tenant, lease, multi or data. If you want to find out which format your WAT file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .wat file to analyze".
Technical Data for WAT File Extension
a wat data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WAT files
- Associate the WAT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest WAT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Watcom C/C++ Compiler update.
- To make sure that your WAT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WAT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
