All about WFA Files
The WFA file type is primarily associated with WildTangent.
What is a WFA file?
For example, one type is a WildTangent game archive used by Tumblebugs to store game assets and data.
Another type is created by WinFax Pro for backing up faxes. These files use a Microsoft Compound file format to package multiple data streams within a single file.
A further variant deals with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). In this case, the file may carry EDI-based workflow automation data or EDI X12 transactions. This usage supports automated business processes and data transfer through dedicated EDI software such as EDI Notepad.
Usage Examples:
How to open a WFA file
You need a suitable software like WildTangent to open a WFA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WFA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WFA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. WFA files are often referred to as WildTangent games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- WinFax Pro (Archive) by Symantec Corporation
WFA file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the WFA files:
WFA is not a common file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all WFA files start with the bytes WFAR, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 7 MB to 29 MB in size, with a median of 29 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Assets.xml and WFAR. Tumblebugs2.wfa or Tumblebugs.wfa is a typical file name.
- 20% of all WFA files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Sections and streams in the file are named _CVPS9 and _L9$$$$$$$$$. The file size is in the range of 2 MB to 27 MB. The file name My Backup Data.WFA is typical for these files. These files are attributed to winfax.
The remaining 60% of all WFA files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: XML and ISA. If you want to find out which format your WFA file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .wfa file to analyze".
Technical Data for WFA File Extension
a wfa archive is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WFA files
- Associate the WFA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open archives. Because only the current version supports the latest WFA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available WildTangent update.
- To make sure that your WFA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WFA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
