Opening XTF Files
The XTF file type is primarily associated with SonarWiz.
What is an XTF file
How to open an XTF file
You need a suitable software like SonarWiz to open an XTF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XTF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XTF file directly in the browser:. Programs that open and convert XTF files:
- SonarWiz
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XTF files are often referred to as SonarWiz data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Triton (eXtended Triton Format file) by TritonXTF graphic files contain the contents of the extended Triton format file. The usage of XTF for the purpose of survey in the hydrographic industry is very common. Although the Triton application no longer seems to be supported on any operating system. The contents of a XTF file can be accessed using the Triton application.
XTF file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the XTF files produces the following result:
Files with the XTF extension are quite widely used. This file type covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 25% of all XTF files are associated with eXtended Triton Format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 2 MB to 150 MB in size, with a median of 26 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Files like these are sometimes connected to sonar, data, multibeam, starfish, survey, line, bathy and scan.
- 20% of all XTF files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 99 KB and 70 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MODELS, VERSION, HEADERSECTION SENDER, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><TRANSFER xmlns="http://www.interlis.ch/INTERLIS2.3"> and ili2fme-7. Such XTF files store data about schienennetz, swisscom, lkmap, interlis, swissboundaries and ticino.
The remaining 55% of all XTF files are different files with different signatures, the following 12 formats exist: Xbox Font, TIFF, config, ZIP, ftypjp, SonarWz and FORM. These files sometimes refer to pepsi, globe, blue, live, book or addax. If you want to find out what your XTF file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
