All about ATR Files

The ATR file type is primarily associated with Xformer.

ATRFile Extension ATR
File extension: ATR
File type:  disk image

What is an ATR file?

ATR files mostly belong to Xformer by Xformer Developers. An ATR file contains a single/double density disk image of an Atari system. A disk image contains the file system, drivers, and resources required to set up an Atari environment. Atari system emulators such as Atari800Win and Xformer can mount and install an ATR disk image. Another type of ATR file is a half-hour, two-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) recording saved as part of MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database. MATLAB can visualize such ECG recordings. A different ATR file contains the attributes report of a printed circuit board created with OrCAD PCB Designer.

How to open ATR files

You need a suitable software like Xformer to open an ATR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ATR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ATR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ATR files:

  1. Xformer by Xformer Developers
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ATR files are often referred to as Xformer disk images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. 7-zip (compressed data) by Igor Pavlov
7-zip is a file compression/decompression program for Windows. It can unpack the contents of an ATR file saved in ZIP compression format. This file format is classified as Compressed.
  3. Lightscape (material library) by Autodesk
Lightscape is a discontinued lighting and visualization software used for interior/exterior lighting design. It used material libraries saved in ATR files. This file format is classified as CAD.
  4. MATLAB (electrocardiogram recording) by MathWorks
MATLAB is a numeric computing environment and programming language. It can be used to visualize electrocardiogram recordings saved in ATR files. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database
  5. OrCAD PCB Designer (PCB attributes report) by Cadence
OrCAD PCB Designer is a computer program for designing and printing printed circuit boards. It uses an ATR file to store the attributes report of a printed circuit board. This file format is classified as Data.

ATR file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ATR files:

The ATR file type is a very commonly used file extension and covers a large number of different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

The remaining 70% of all ATR files are files with no common format, often e.g. ZIP, Relax, NODE and AFIB. These files sometimes refer to subject, tempeda, fixed, exdm, animation, report, clust, probe, high or rank. If you want to find out what your ATR file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an atr disk image is a special file format by Xformer Developers and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with ATR files

  • Associate the ATR file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest ATR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Xformer Developers manufacturer website after an available Xformer update.
  • To make sure that your ATR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ATR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
