All about MAIL Files
The MAIL file type is primarily associated with Email Clients.
What is a MAIL file
A MAIL file is not a single format. It is a file extension used to store email messages in different ways. The internal file can hold data as a PDF document, HTML page, plain text message, or other specific formats. The content dictates which tool you use to view it.
- PDF emails: Email stored as a PDF file (created with tools like wkhtmltopdf). Open these with any PDF reader.
- HTML emails: Email messages in HTML format as used by platforms like GroupWise.
- Plain text emails: Simple email messages that sometimes follow the mboxrd style, seen in products like Mailman (Mailman).
- Email client files: Native email messages stored by applications such as MailEnable or Mozilla Thunderbird.
- Serialized/RTF formats: Emails saved as serialized data (e.g. via the Nette Framework, see Nette Framework) or as RTF files from Microsoft Outlook.
- Image containers: Files holding email data using image formats like PNG or JPG.
- Other uses: In rare cases, a MAIL file may contain data unrelated to email (for example, payroll or CSV data).
FilExt.com note: How you open the file depends on its internal format. A PDF file should be opened with a PDF reader; an HTML file in a browser; plain text with an email client or text editor; and so on.
How can I open a MAIL file?
You need a suitable software like Email Clients to open a MAIL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAIL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAIL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MAIL file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the MAIL files:
