What is an RPS file?

RPS files mostly belong to DevExpress VCL by Developer Express. RPS stands for Render Preset Settings. The RPS file format is used by 3ds Max, which is a 3D modelling, rendering, and animation software developed by Autodesk. Rendering is the process of creating a 2D image or animation from a 3D scene. RPS files store preset render settings, including lighting, materials, and camera settings. Render presets can be accessed in 3ds Max from the Render Setup dialog, the Render Shortcuts toolbar, and the Rendered Frame window. 3ds Max comes packaged with default presets, and users can create their own custom presets as well. The RPS files that store the default presets are located in the \render presets subfolder of the 3ds Max installation directory. Users are recommended to save custom presets in the same folder, but they can be stored in a different location as well. Users can also specify a custom location. To do this, open the Configure User Paths dialog box. Then set the path for render presets in the File I/O panel.

How to open an RPS file

You need a suitable software like DevExpress VCL to open an RPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RPS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
