What is an STF file?

STF files mostly belong to Salesforce Translation Workbench. STF files do not refer to a single format. The most common use is as a translation file for the Salesforce Translation Workbench. In this role the file holds language entries and user interface text, often encoded in UTF-8 or UTF-16.
Other uses include:

Setup Configuration: Files that manage installer or project settings for software like Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper or Visual Studio 6.0.

Compressed Archives: STF files may be ZIP archives and serve as templates (for example, Sibelius Score Template Files). See PKWARE for more details.

Database and Log Files: Some implementations store data as a Standard Jet DB file or log events for applications such as the Emerald engine.

How do you open STF files?

You need a suitable software like Salesforce Translation Workbench to open an STF file. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. 45% of all STF files start with the bytes # U crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. STF files are between 68 KB and 3 MB in size. 4% of all STF files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one STF file. The average file count is 3 with most STF files containing between 1 - 3 compressed files. File names inside are always summary.json. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 9 KB to 2 MB in size.

All other STF files (51%) have no uniform format, often e.g. Windows Setup Table File, UTF-8, JetDB, UTF-16 (LE) and EMERALD.
