What is a TEL file?

TEL files mostly belong to TEL Viewer.

• Train Event Logs: TEL files often record train event data used by TEL Viewer for monitoring train system events.
  
• Flight Data: Some files store telemetry data from flights, used to log key information during aviation operations.
  
• Contact Lists: Certain TEL files hold phone contacts or pager directories. For example, Nokia Phone Browser uses them to list telephone numbers.

How to open a TEL file

You need a suitable software like TEL Viewer to open a TEL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the TEL files:

The TEL file extension is not found very often and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all TEL files start with the bytes header.xml crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. TEL files can be up to 720 MB in size, but are often around 230 KB - 31 MB. The keywords header.xml, 000000 and 000644 are typical for these files. A usual file name is 3014_2020-06-01 10-30_TRAXXAC3CONF01.tel. These files can be linked to traxxac, conf and rabe.
• 15% of all TEL files use the same file format, which have the signature TEL. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 780 bytes to 2 KB in size. The files contain the following words: TEL DIR V1.0. These files are attributed to municp.
