What is an ELG file?

ELG files mostly belong to IBM IMM. ELG files are specialized log files used by many different systems to record events, errors, and diagnostic data. They are generated automatically by software and hardware systems for troubleshooting and system monitoring.

You need a suitable software like IBM IMM to open an ELG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit ELG files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. The ELG file extension is quite common and includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all ELG files start with the bytes Index, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 950 bytes to 110 KB in size, with a median of 54 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The files contain the following words: Index,Severity,Service State,Source,Date,Sequence #,Event ID,Message,AuxLog, System, Login ID, Remote Login Successful, 4000000E00000000, Login Successful, webguis and USERID from. The file name spevents.elg is typical for these files. These files can be linked to ffev.
• 9% of all ELG files start with the bytes 1. crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. ELG files are between 2 KB and 97 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Login ID, Remote Login, Successful. Login, USERID from, USERID from Web at IP address 192 and ffff. Examples of file names are spevents.elg.

All other ELG files (66%) have no consistent format, the following 14 formats can be found: XML, GZIP, Downloaded, IKE and vpnd. Tagged as package, show, trimble, bash, server or beam.
