What is a GOB file?

GOB files mostly belong to Game engine / Go tools. GOB files are binary files that serve two main purposes.
Game Resource Archives:
They are used as containers for game assets. Many games, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and titles like Indiana Jones and related games, use this format to bundle textures, models, sounds, and other game data. The file lets the game engine load needed resources quickly.
Go Binary Serialization:

Sometimes, you might even encounter GOB files that are formatted as Windows executables or compressed bundles.

How to open a GOB file

You need a suitable software like Game engine / Go tools to open a GOB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the GOB files comes to the following conclusion:

The file type with the extension 'GOB' is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all GOB files are associated with LucasArts Game data archive. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 2 MB to 350 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as GOB. The following filename is common: CD1.GOB or sounds.gob. Such GOB files store data about sprites, data and textures.
• 15% of all GOB files start with the magic bytes BIGF, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 330 MB and 470 MB in size. The files contain the following words: BIGF, 28244227249ab3b8fd524d5f86c7eac0.dat, A06c506c9d7c24643e391bc40612c9b32.bsl, 2bb7ad25c9aa96dc7b6f670d84a4df83.big and f85c927a9dcdde1b68266c5a75f586a9.bin. The file name data.gob is typical for these files.
