Opening a PID File

The PID file type is primarily associated with Linux.

PIDFile Extension PID
File extension: PID
File type:  process identity

What is a PID file?

PID files mostly belong to Linux by The Linux Foundation. A PID file contains the process identification number of a daemon or program running on Linux and UNIX-based system. It contains one line of text which is the identification number of a process. Applications and daemons save their process ID to a PID file in case they need to self-terminate. A user can also kill a process by redirecting/piping the output of the file to the xargs kill command. A different PID file is the W32/Yayin-A worm (dangerous/malicious file) which attacks Windows systems. PID is also the filename extension of a search report generated by JADE XRD pattern processing software.

How to open PID files

You need a suitable software like Linux to open a PID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PID file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PID files:

  1. Linux by The Linux Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PID files are often referred to as Linux miscs because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. AVG Antivirus (worm) by AVG
AVG Antivirus is an application that protects PCs and mobile devices against malware and spyware. It can detect and delete a W32/Yayin-A worm on a Windows system. This worm file has PID filename extension. This file format is classified as Executable.
  3. JADE (search report) by Materials Data
AVG Antivirus is an application that protects PCs and mobile devices against malware and spyware. It can detect and delete a W32/Yayin-A worm on a Windows system. This worm file has PID filename extension. This file format is classified as Data.
  4. SQLite (database) by SQLite Consortium
SQLite is a cross-platform C language library which serves as a relational database management system. It can access an SQLite database saved in a PID file. This file format is classified as Database.

PID file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the PID files looks like this:

PID is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other PID files (50%) have no uniform format, such as SQL and JSON. You can get all the details of your PID file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .pid file to analyze" above.

a pid process identity is a special file format by The Linux Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with PID files

  • Associate the PID file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open process identitys. Because only the current version supports the latest PID file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the The Linux Foundation manufacturer website after an available Linux update.
  • To make sure that your PID file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PID file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
