All about STI Files
The STI file type is primarily associated with Jagged Alliance 2.
What is an STI file?
Other usages include:
- Sticky Notes Files: Some STI files are text files encoded in UTF-16 (LE) used by note-taking applications such as SuperMemo (SuperMemo website) and Sticky Password (Sticky Password website), storing brief note data.
- Game Save Files: In other cases, the extension marks a game save file (for example, from Into the Breach), holding the state of a game.
- Presentation Templates: A number of STI files serve as templates for OpenOffice/LibreOffice Impress. They typically use the ZIP format to bundle presentation data (LibreOffice website).
- Database Files: Certain STI files use a JetDB structure. They are employed in environments like Microsoft Access and even in industrial projects such as Siemens STEP 7 (Microsoft Access website).
FilExt.com note: Each variation uses its own internal structure, so determining the file's origin is key to choosing the correct application for viewing or editing.
How can I open an STI file?
You need a suitable software like Jagged Alliance 2 to open an STI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your STI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a STI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

STI file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the STI files looks like this:
The STI file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in STI files are:
- 25% of all STI files start with the bytes ST crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. STI files can be up to 610 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 260 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. STCI.
- 15% of all STI files are based on the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. STI files can be up to 7 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 16 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ansi, deff0, rtf1, width, title, ansicpg1252, deflang1033, col: 255,255,180, fonttbl and nouicompat. Files like these have the following tags: writing.
The remaining 60% of all STI files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. ZIP, JetDB and col. These files are often connected to save, auto, slot or data. If you want to find out which format your STI file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .sti file to view".
