Opening XFD Files
The XFD file type is primarily associated with PureEdge Forms Designer.
What is an XFD file?
These files typically include the XML Form Data structure that describes fields, controls, and the layout of forms. They are created and used by dedicated form design tools.
How can I open an XFD file?
You need a suitable software like PureEdge Forms Designer to open an XFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XFD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XFD file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the XFD files is as follows:
The XFD extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in XFD files are:
- 75% of all XFD files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 82 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <!DOCTYPE formData [, <!ATTLIST formData FileType (XFD!XFN!X and <!ELEMENT formData (formName, formVersion, date, nPages, formVars?, formBinary*, formPages* )>. Files like these have the following tags: form, lrtr, information, fssd, fittings, transfer, edition, cancellation and contents, and often consist of personal data.
- 15% of all XFD files start with the bytes application/, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 20 KB to 89 KB. The keywords application/vnd.xfdl;content-encoding="base64-gzip", H4sIAAAAAAAAC and x-xfdl are typical for these files. The following filename is common: enclform.xfd. These files can be linked to ssan.
All other XFD files (10%) have no uniform format, often, for example, Acu4GL/AcuCOBOL Extended File Descriptor. The category is property, restriction, registered, annex, claim, title or whole. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your XFD file!
