What is a BVH file?

BVH files mostly belong to Blender by Blender. BVH is a cross-platform file format for storing the motion capture data of the 3D characters (especially bipeds) in a 3D animation. The raw contents of a BVH file are ASCII-encoded text. Although the BVH file format was developed by the defunct BioVision, the format is still largely used by many 3D modelling software and game engines including Poser, Blender, and Second Life. Various 3-dimensional software applications that support asset exportation often use the BVH file format as the standard format for storing character motion data.

How do you open BVH files?

You need a suitable software like Blender to open a BVH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BVH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BVH file directly in the browser:. BVH file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. The BVH file type mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 95% of all BVH files belong to Biovision Hierarchy character animation format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are on average 530 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 4 MB. The file type is very old but is also used today. The files contain the following words: JOINT, HIERARCHY, ROOT Hips, OFFSET 0 and CHANNELS 6 Xposition Yposition Zposition Zrotation Xrotation Yrotation. The file name empty.bvh is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to motion, take, walk, adult, char, anger, male, gesture, custom, female, model, scene, stand, trial, anbh and trim.
