What is a DPX file?

DPX files mostly belong to XnView by XnSoft. DPX is a raster image file format used to store a single frame of a digital moving picture sequence. A DPX file may also contain color spaces, image data, and color information used to exchange still frames that are part of a video stream across post-production video processing applications. The contents of such DPX files are structured as a series of headers beginning with the file header and followed by the image header, orientation header, film info header, television info header, user-defined data, and raster image data. The image data stored in a DPX file may be compressed with a run-length encoding scheme or stored as raw uncompressed data. You can open these DPX files with programs such as XnView, Photoshop, and Final Cut. DPX filename extension is also used to save authentication data used by Digipass software.

How do you open DPX files?

You need a suitable software like XnView to open a DPX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DPX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DPX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  1. XnView by XnSoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DPX files are often referred to as XnView raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Photoshop (bitmap) by Adobe
Photoshop is a raster graphics editor for desktop and mobile devices. This piece of software is mainly used to edit or enhance photographs. It supports a wide array of raster image file formats including DPX, JPG, and PNG. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: Digital Picture Exchange, Cineon

DPX file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DPX files:

The DPX file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in DPX files:

All the rest of the DPX files (10%) have different formats. If you want to find out what your DPX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with DPX files

  • Associate the DPX file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open bitmaps. Because only the current version supports the latest DPX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
  • To make sure that your DPX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DPX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
