Opening an EDP File
The EDP file type is primarily associated with Attachmate Extra!.
What is an EDP file?
EDP files serve varied roles based on the software that creates them.
They are not a single standard but can store different types of data such as session information, image data, scripts, or even encrypted patches.
Examples include:
- Host Connectivity Sessions: Used by Attachmate Extra! X-treme for Windows to save session details. More details can be found at Rocket Software.
- Compressed Image Files: Some EDP files carry image data encoded with the JFIF format, such as JPEG 2000 images. See LEAD Technologies for more insight.
- Finite Element Scripts: In FreeFem++, an EDP file acts as a script file containing instructions for simulations. Visit FreeFem++ for further information.
- Resource and Patch Data: Amos Professional uses EDP files to hold resource data and encode delta patches. Similarly, other versions serve as encrypted database patches for systems like Microsoft Dynamics AX; check out PKWARE for details.
- EPUB Packages: Some EDP files function as encapsulated data packages or eBooks for Amazon Kindle, with internal ZIP compression. More at Amazon Kindle.
- Emergency Data Packets: A variant is used to deliver emergency payload data.
If you have an EDP file, identify its origin to decide the proper application for opening it.
FilExt.com note: A text editor might work for script files but not for encrypted patches or session data. Check for embedded clues or consult the related webpage if available.
How to open EDP files
You need a suitable software like Attachmate Extra! to open an EDP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EDP file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the EDP files:
The EDP file ending is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all EDP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " [Document ID] " at the beginning. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 20 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. CPModule=sessionp.dll, CPType=SESSION, Icon={28000000200000004000000001000400000000008002000000000000000000000000000000, [Document ID], [Windows Icon], EDPVer=2001 and Language=ENU. Some examples of file names are Session1.EDP. Such files sometimes refer to extra.
- 15% of all EDP files are based on the popular JFIF file format. JFIF is short for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is a bitmap graphic that uses JPEG compression. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 530 KB to 5 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. JFIF and JFXX.
All other EDP files (65%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Source, ZIP, PKml, Emergency and real. Often described as database, patch, script or template. You can get all the details of your EDP file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .edp file to analyze" above.

an edp data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with EDP files
- Associate the EDP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest EDP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Attachmate Extra! update.
- To make sure that your EDP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EDP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
