Opening a GM File
The GM file type is primarily associated with SheetCam.
What is a GM file
A GM file is not one single format but a file extension used for several different types of data. Its purpose and functionality depend on the software that created it. The most common use is as a CNC plasma cutting file, also known as a Mastercam Geometry file. This file stores cutting and design data that is used in manufacturing systems, and it is typically opened with specialized CAM software like SheetCam.
Other uses include:
- Garry's Mod Addon: A GM file can be an addon file for the game Garry's Mod. These files add custom content to the game and are managed via the Steam Workshop (view workshop).
- 3D Model Geometry: In some cases, a GM file contains 3D geometric data created by programs like Maya or 3D GameStudio. Such files help build the structure of 3D models. More information is available at Maya Overview.
- Soundbank Data: Certain GM files store audio information such as general MIDI soundbanks. These can be used with tools like FluidSynth (FluidSynth) or MIDI sequencers (MIDI.org).
- 3D Texture/Material Files: Some files carry texture or material data, useful in game development and 3D rendering.
- Galaxy Simulation Models: A small subset contains data for galaxy simulations, associated with software such as Galaxy Maker.
- Image Data: Rarely, the extension is applied to image or raster graphics, which can be processed by programs like Adobe Photoshop.
Usage Notes:
To open a GM file, identify its origin by checking metadata or its folder context. Use the specific application that created the file to ensure proper viewing and editing. This avoids accidental corruption and misinterpretation of the file's data.
FilExt.com tip: Always back up your file before trying new software or file conversion methods.
How do you open GM files?

Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GM file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GM files:
GM is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all GM files start with the bytes 50.1 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 10 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. The keywords unknown material group, GEOMETRY, lambert, Hand and joint are typical for these files. These files are attributed to ship, black and pearl.
- 15% of all GM files start with the bytes G70 G90 M06 T1 G00 X, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are 700 bytes to 130 KB in size, with a median of 12 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. M06 T1. Such files sometimes refer to plate.
The remaining 45% of all GM files are files with no common format, such as Game Music, GameMaker archive and MIDI. They are often associated with uploads, addons or swep. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your GM file!

How to solve problems with GM files
- Associate the GM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available SheetCam update.
- To make sure that your GM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
