What is a PRX file?

PRX files mostly belong to Windows Movie Maker by Microsoft. The PRX extension is most commonly used as data files that contain UTF-8 text and binary-encoded data, but it has also been used by an archive file format that compresses the resources of a document into one bundle.

  • Main Use: The PRX extension is mostly associated with Windows where it is used as an XML-based multimedia format to publish digital videos along with their specific profiles. It is opened by Windows Media Encoder, Media Profile Editor, Media Player and Movie Maker. A PRX profile file stores the audio and video codecs, target bit rates, etc. This helps to publish videos with the intended formatting and quality. The XML file has a parent container element that contains other properties such as stream configuration that define the formatting of the media. The default storage directory on Windows is \Program Files\Windows media components\Encoder\Profiles.
  • Other Uses: The PRX extension is associated with several programs. Apcahe Lucene, an open-source text search engine library written for high-efficiency information retrieval, uses PRX files to store indexes and frequencies of text. Sony uses PRX files to patch the firmware on their PSP console and COREX, a program built to provide aces to the spoken Dutch corpus (Corpus Gesproken Nederlands), creates prosodic annotations in XML format, and uses the PRX extension. Other programs include KNX, FoxPro Compiler and Primavera.

How do you open PRX files?

You need a suitable software like Windows Movie Maker to open a PRX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PRX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PRX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
