Opening a PVS File
The PVS file type is primarily associated with PTC Creo.
What is a PVS file
- PTC Creo Viewable Session:
These files are generated by Creo Parametric as view sessions for 3D models. They store visualization data rather than full model details. For more on this format, visit PTC.
- Pig Variation Suite Data:
In some cases, a PVS file is used by SAS software to hold breeding genetic evaluation data. This usage serves data analysis in genetics.
- IMG File with Header:
Another variant is seen as an image file with header information. This format finds use in navigation systems, for example in Honda systems, and is linked with tools by PVS-Studio. Additional details are available at PVS-Studio.
FilExt.com tip: To open a PVS file, use the software that matches its origin. For example, files from Creo require PTC Creo, genetic data files need SAS components, and IMG files associated with navigation may require specialized viewers.
How to open PVS files
You need a suitable software like PTC Creo to open a PVS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PVS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PVS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PVS file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the PVS files:
The PVS file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all PVS files use the same file format, which have the signature PV-PVS0. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 150 bytes to 7 KB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as WindchillEPM, PV-PVS0301 and PROE Parameters. These files can be linked to slddrw and catpart.
- 7% of all PVS files start with the bytes Temperament , which are crucial for this file format. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 4 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Trait, Temperament Production and Ecode is E for Estimable, * for Not Estimable. Such PVS files store data about dahlen and dqba.
All other PVS files (28%) have no consistent format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PVS file!

How to solve problems with PVS files
- Associate the PVS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open view session files. Because only the current version supports the latest PVS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PTC Creo update.
- To make sure that your PVS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PVS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
