What is a TSV file?

TSV files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. TSV is the filename extension of ASCII text files containing tab-separated values. These files are mainly used to exchange data between databases and spreadsheet applications. TSV files contain structured text data where each value of a record is delimited by a tab. You may open or create such TSV files with Excel, Calc, or text editor such as Sublime. Tab-delimited values have text/tab-separated-values MIME type. TSV filename extension is also used to store video files in MPEG transport stream format. TSV video files contain packetized video streams, metadata, images, text, and error correction utilities captured from a HD recording device or from a digital video broadcast. The Internet media type used by these TSV files is video/MP2T. TSV videos are sometimes called "Time Shift videos" because TV and satellite stations rely on time shifting technology to record and store live broadcasts as TSV files.

How to open TSV files

You need a suitable software like Excel to open a TSV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TSV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TSV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

TSV file format details:

To view or edit TSV files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the TSV files:

The TSV file type is a very commonly used file extension and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other TSV files (82%) have no uniform format, the following 16 formats exist: UTF-8, UTF-16 (LE), Num, VUUU, uni, tconst, Order, Shipment, nconst and URL. Tagged as report, export, table, metadata, sequenceserver, origin, train or year.
